Description: Diplodocus is a long, low diplodocid sauropod whose neck and tail together composed much of its enormous length. It cropped understory vegetation at mid height while its pencil-like teeth skimmed branches rather than grinding them. The whip-like tail may have served for display, intraspecific signaling, and defensive strikes; modeling suggests the terminal segment could generate a supersonic crack under extreme lashes.
